Black walnut is often considered the finest American furniture wood. Over the years, I've used it for a number of desks and dining tables. Lower grade walnut frequently has more interesting character, and greater potential beauty. I use sugar maple for the drawer sides. These pieces are made with dovetails and mortise and tenon joints. The rolltop desk uses conventional period hardware. For the desk below, I turned black walnut knobs on the lathe. ![]() |
